What is Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction (DDPI)?

  • POA: POA stands for Power of Attorney, which is a legal document that allows someone (the "attorney-in-fact") to act on behalf of another person (the "principal") in legal and financial matters. It's like giving someone permission to make decisions and take actions on your behalf. In the context of stock trading, a POA would allow a broker to access a client's demat account and trade securities on their behalf. However, as I mentioned earlier, POAs are no longer allowed in India.

  • DDPI: Basically, DDPI allows your broker to take securities out of your demat account and transfer them to the exchange for settlement. It's kind of like giving your broker permission to use the securities you hold as collateral for trades. This is a way for your broker to make sure that your trades are backed by the assets you own, and it helps prevent any delays in trade settlement. It's different from a Power of Attorney (POA), which used to be the way brokers accessed securities in a client's demat account. POAs are no longer used in India, and DDPI is the new standard.
