What does the "SM" or "M" symbol beside a stock mean?

Some of our clients ask us how to trade stocks on NSE Emerge or BSE SME because they believe these are only available on another platform of the exchange. All stocks listed on NSE Emerge or BSE SME can be viewed and traded directly on any of Tiqs trading platforms.

  1. Stocks listed in EMERGE are available on the NSE under the 'SM' category. Here is a list of stocks that are currently trading in this category.
  2. Stocks listed in SME are available in the 'M' category on the BSE. Here is a list of stocks that are currently trading in this category.

The only difference between these stocks and F&O is that they are traded in lots. You cannot purchase a single share or an odd number of shares. The exchange determines the lot size for each of these stocks. These stocks can only be traded in multiples of their lot size. (*The lot size can be found by looking at the market depth on the exchange website.)

A synopsis of the two exchanges:

  1. NSE EMERGE is a credible and efficient exchange that provides a platform for the best emerging corporates to raise capital from Institutional Investors and HNIs following a credible admission process. It is a source of funding for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).
  2. Companies with high growth potential, subsidiary companies, companies funded by VC firms/angel investors, and project SVPs are all part of the EMERGE asset class.
  3. BSE SME operates along the same lines, providing a platform for SMEs and Investors to meet and transact.
  4. The brochures attached below provide additional information on the regulatory framework, trading platform, and listing benefits.
